ChicagoHearing Society (CHS) has served Chicago’s Deaf community since 1916. Havingmerged with Anixter Center in 1997, CHS’s mission to “provide communicationaccess, hearing and assistive technologies, and support services for people whoare Deaf.” In March 1979, CHS became the first organization in Illinois to offer a signlanguage interpreter referral service. Through adding technology and maximizing efficiency, we have been able to increase the number of people we serve consistently. Currently, we provide more than 4,000 hours of interpreterservice per month in a variety of settings including government offices, hospitalsand clinics, colleges and universities, businesses, conventions and conferences,stage performances, and religious settings. Although located in Chicago, weprovide a significant amount of service in DuPage County since we have a large number of licensed interpreters who live and work in DuPage County. Presently,we have a pool of 304 qualified sign language interpreters available for assignments who live throughout the Chicago metropolitan area as well as inother parts of Illinois, southern Wisconsin, and northeastern Indiana. We require all the interpreters with whom to we contract to be licensed by the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC) prior to providing service. Founded in 1919, Lester and RosalieAnixter Center’s (Anixter Center) mission is to “provide an array of servicesand supports to help people with disabilities and related challenges to live,learn, work, and play in the community.” With over 30 locations throughout theChicago metropolitan area, Anixter Center serves over 6,000 children, teens andadults annually, most of whom live at or below the federal poverty level.
