Vegan Soul is a personal chef/catering business specializingin tasteful vegan food. It is the brainchild of Zakiya Courtney, a mother of a blended/extended family of 15,grandmother of 50, great-grandmother to 16. She is a wife of 41 years , an educator by profession, culturalcommunity activist by heart. Preparing comfortfoods is her passion. Zakiya proudlysays “I can veganize anything”.With over 47 years of experience preparing food for a largefamily, Zakiya had to learn quickly how to prepare delicious soulful vegetarian/veganfood for her children when the family decided to change their diet 28 years ago. Family and friendsincreasingly asked Zakiya for her vegetarian/vegan food at family and communityevents. The most popular requests werefor her 9-Layer Salad, “made from scratch” Biscuits, Southern-style Greens andPeanut Stew. After winning several “Greens Cook-off” Challenges and doinglive food demos for Fondy Market, the requests for tasty vegan foodreminiscence of familiar comfort foods grew exponentially. Zakiya Courtney was so well-received at the Body and SoulCenter and Alice’s Garden that her passion grew into the personal chef/cateringbusiness-Vegan Soul. She is also thefeatured chef on Vegan Soul Fridays at Tricklebee Café, a pay-what-you-canrestaurant in Milwaukee. Most recently Zakiya had the honor of participatingand preparing food with six other chefs at a community dinner for Michael W. Twitty,author of The Cooking Gene and food blog Afroculinaria and a prestigious VIPPopup at 2019 FarmAid Concert. Zakiyaand Vegan Soul have been featured in The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and BlackWomen 50+ Health & Lifestyles Magazine.
